YouTube Updates View Counting Metric to Register Views Instantly
YouTube has announced a major change to how public views are counted across its platform. The new metric will register a view as soon as a video starts playing or a live broadcast is entered.

On August 17, 2026, YouTube officially announced a significant change to how public views are counted on its platform. Under the newly updated system, the platform will register a view as soon as a video starts playing or someone enters a live broadcast.
According to the official announcement, the change is scheduled to go into effect globally on August 24, 2026. Addressing the rationale behind the shift, YouTube explained the background in a statement. Historically, the platform has used multiple view counting systems across different formats. However, representatives noted that creators want to eliminate this metric confusion and accurately understand their true exposure, which is why this update is being implemented.
Despite the update to public view metrics, the original view metric will not disappear entirely. It will remain accessible to creators as 'Engaged views' through the platform's Analytics tools. Furthermore, YouTube confirmed that the overarching change will not impact creator earnings or overall eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program.
Clarifying how payouts are handled under the updated system, YouTube provided additional details regarding creator monetization. Creator earnings will continue to be based on 'Engaged Shorts views' and 'Engaged Watch Hours,' which creators can view by navigating to YouTube Analytics and accessing the Advanced Mode.
Looking ahead to future requirements, creators will need to meet specific numerical thresholds starting next year. Specifically, participants will need at least 8,000 qualified watch hours over the past year or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days under the new thresholds starting next year.
