Wisley Common Pond Hits Two-Decade Low Amid Prolonged UK Drought

A pond at Pond Farm on Wisley Common in Surrey has reached its lowest level in nearly two decades following more than 50 days without rainfall and the UK's fifth heatwave of the year. Surrey Wildlife Trust is now considering a licence to release beavers into the county to help cope with extreme weather conditions.

A pond located at Pond Farm on Wisley Common in Surrey, UK, has reached its lowest level for nearly two decades amid prolonged drought and intense hot weather recorded in recent weeks. The environmental drying out of the water body serves as a striking visual reminder of severe climate pressures currently affecting the local landscape.

Meteorologists stationed at Wisley have documented more than 50 days of no rainfall during the ongoing dry spell. This lack of precipitation coincides directly with the United Kingdom experiencing its fifth heatwave of the year, pushing local ecosystems to critical thresholds.

James Herd, speaking on the severe environmental impact observed in the area, stated that he had "never seen the pond so low." Emphasizing the broader implications of the drying landscape, Herd added, "It is a very obvious visual indication of the scale of the drought."

Addressing the ongoing debate surrounding changing climate patterns, Herd noted, "Sceptical or not, the data shows that we are getting more extremes." To combat these intensifying environmental challenges and manage future water scarcity, the Surrey Wildlife Trust (SWT) is currently considering a licence to release beavers into the county.

Detailing the potential benefits of reintroducing the species—which were notably hunted to extinction about 400 years ago—Herd expressed confidence in natural ecological solutions. He stated that "they will do the rewetting work for us... we should look to nature to help us cope better."
