UK Bans Disposable Barbecues and Deploys Military Amid Wildfires

Disposable barbecues have been temporarily banned from sale across England, Scotland, and Wales following a surge in severe wildfire risks during the ongoing heatwave. The sweeping restrictions come into effect as the United Kingdom grapples with exceptionally dry conditions that have created extreme environmental hazards across multiple regions.

Official figures released on 25 July reveal that a staggering 1,017 wildfires have been recorded in England and Wales this year alone. Andy Burnham highlighted the immediate gravity of the situation, stating, “We've got 37 fires across England and Wales right now, four of them are major incidents.”

To combat the escalating crisis, 200 military personnel have been deployed to support fire services, including Gurkha logistics teams assisting emergency responders in South Wales. The extraordinary intervention underscores the immense pressure currently facing the nation's firefighting infrastructure.

Andy Burnham issued a stark warning regarding the dangerous conditions on the ground, emphasizing, “Britain is a tinderbox right now. Setting a fire in any outdoor setting of any kind is a risk to other people's homes, it's a risk to other people's lives, don't do it, please don't do it.”

Furthermore, Burnham criticized the existing emergency framework, noting, “We have a fire and rescue service across the country that isn't properly set up to deal with these incidents.” Local leaders have welcomed the restrictions, with David Skaith noting, “We know the risks that disposable barbecues have been causing and to have a ban on them is much-needed, much-called-for and I hope it becomes long-term.”
