Tsinghua University Researcher Wins Nikon Small World In Motion
A researcher from Tsinghua University in China has won Nikon's annual Small World In Motion competition. The winning entry features cilia in the airways of a child with a rare genetic disease.

Nikon has announced the winner of its annual Small World In Motion competition, which is open to anyone around the world with an interest in film or time-lapse photography through a microscope. The prestigious international competition celebrates excellence and scientific discovery captured through microscopic imaging technology.
This year's winning video was submitted by Dr Ning Xu, a researcher at Tsinghua University in China. Dr Xu's winning submission provides a remarkable and detailed look into microscopic biological structures that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye.
The winning video was magnified to 100 times in size and specifically featured tiny hair-like structures, known as cilia, in the airways of a child with a rare genetic disease. The detailed visualization offers valuable insight into the microscopic characteristics associated with the unnamed rare genetic condition.
To achieve the striking visual results in the winning footage, Dr Ning Xu used a series of complicated light waves to illuminate different parts of the sample in colour. This advanced illumination technique allowed for enhanced clarity and differentiation of the microscopic structures within the child's airway sample.
The Small World In Motion competition continues to serve as a global platform highlighting the intersection of scientific research and artistic imaging. Entries from participants worldwide who possess an interest in microscope-based film and time-lapse photography are evaluated annually by the judging panel.
