On Friday, rescue operations intensified in Nepal and Tibet following a devastating series of natural disasters triggered by a glacier breach and severe flooding near the Tibetan border. According to verified reports, at least one hundred individuals remain trapped inside a tunnel belonging to the Trishuli-3A hydropower project in Nepal. Local authorities and emergency response teams are facing extreme challenges in locating the exact entrances to the affected underground structure.
Raja Ram Basnet provided details regarding the ongoing rescue efforts at the Trishuli-3A hydropower facility, stating that emergency responders were actively attempting to reach the trapped workers. As part of the response, two helicopters were deployed to the area to assist with the operation. However, Basnet noted that identifying the exact locations of the tunnel entrances has proven exceptionally difficult for the rescue teams on the ground.
In the broader region encompassing Nepal and Tibet, the disaster has resulted in a massive humanitarian crisis. Official statistics confirm that rescue teams have successfully recovered 472 bodies so far. Concurrently, approximately 350 workers and local residents have been safely evacuated from danger zones. Despite these rescue and evacuation efforts, the scale of the disaster remains immense, with more than 1,400 people still reported missing.
The catastrophe was precipitated by the breach of a lake's dam close to the Tibet border, which unleashed torrents of water and debris across the region. In response to the escalating crisis and the ongoing threat of further instability, authorities have issued new flood warnings for the affected areas. Emergency personnel, including the Nepal Army and Nepal Police, remain on high alert as search and recovery operations continue under perilous conditions, with support from international news reporting provided by AFP.
