Arun Kumar Chatterjee, universally known by his screen name Uttam Kumar, was born on September 3, 1926, in the Ahiritola neighborhood of Kolkata, India. During his formative working years, he was employed at the Kolkata Port Commissioners, balancing ordinary professional duties before the trajectory of his life shifted entirely toward the dramatic arts.
His entry into the film industry materialized in 1948 when he made his acting debut in the film 'Dristidan', which was directed by Nirmal Dey.
