Short Videos Reduce Brain Activity in Youth, New Study Finds
A recent study published in the journal NeuroImage reveals that watching short-form videos reduces brain activity in areas related to attention, self-control, and decision-making. Researchers observed the neurological functions of 56 young participants using advanced imaging technology.

A newly published scientific study in the journal NeuroImage has shed light on how consuming short-form videos impacts the human brain. According to the research findings, watching short videos—such as reels or shorts—leads to a noticeable decrease in activity within the specific regions of the brain that are primarily responsible for attention, self-control, and decision-making processes.
The comprehensive study was conducted in 2025 by researchers Nicholas Burton and Michael Smith. To gather accurate neurological data, the researchers closely monitored and analyzed the brain activity of 56 young participants during the viewing process. Most of the short-form videos featured in the observation had a duration of less than thirty seconds, reflecting typical user consumption patterns on major platforms like Meta, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
In order to precisely measure what kind of changes occur within the brain during this activity, the research team utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging, commonly known as fMRI technology. This advanced imaging allowed the scientists to observe real-time neurological responses and pinpoint the exact areas of the brain where activity diminished while the participants engaged with the short-form digital content.
Despite the concerning finding regarding reduced activity in areas tied to self-control and decision-making, the study also provided important clarification regarding long-term impacts. Researchers emphasized that the study did not find any evidence suggesting that watching reels or shorts causes permanent damage to the brain, nor did it show that overall brain function shuts down temporarily.
The publication of these findings in the NeuroImage journal adds to the ongoing global scientific discourse surrounding digital consumption habits among youth.
