Severe Storms Lash Italy as Weather Warnings Issued Across 12 Regions

Severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall struck various parts of Italy on Friday, prompting Italian authorities to issue urgent weather warnings across 12 regions. The meteorological disturbance was triggered by a sweeping Atlantic weather system that brought intense and disruptive thunderstorms to both northern and central areas of the country.

The adverse weather system affected numerous Italian territories and cities on Friday, with the Civil Protection Department and regional authorities closely monitoring the severe conditions. According to reports from Sky TG24, the widespread rainfall and stormy weather created hazardous situations throughout the impacted provinces as the Atlantic front moved across the Italian peninsula.

Among the locations affected by the severe weather on Friday were Florence, Abruzzo, Basilicata, Lazio, Campania, Lombardy, Marche, Molise, Puglia, Sardinia, Sicily, Umbria, Tuscany, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Regional officials across these dozen-plus areas maintained heightened alert levels as the heavy downpours persisted throughout the day.

The severe weather also impacted major cultural heritage sites during the storm activity. Water managed to seep into the renowned Uffizi Gallery, creating a moment of concern for museum staff and preservationists as the heavy rainfall battered the historic building in Florence.

During the incident at the gallery, water splashed onto the exterior glass of the protective case housing Caravaggio's famous masterpiece, Bacchus. However, Italian authorities confirmed that no damage was reported to the artwork itself following the water seepage inside the museum.
