Severe Fish Kill Devastates Five Kilometres of Kilkeel River in County Down

A severe fish kill occurred last week along the Kilkeel River in the Mournes area of County Down, leaving a five-kilometre stretch of the waterway heavily impacted. The Department of Environment (Daera) confirmed that the devastating pollution event resulted in the deaths of various aquatic species, specifically noting that trout, eels, and lamprey were found dead within the affected area.

Addressing the ongoing investigation into the disaster, a Daera spokesperson stated that no active discharge was found during their initial inspections. However, the department's representatives added that a definite line of enquiry is currently being followed regarding the source of the pollution.

The ecological toll of the incident has been described as catastrophic by local fishing organizations. Representatives from the Kilkeel Angling Club reported that several generations of juvenile fish have been wiped out as a result of the toxic contamination affecting the waterway.

Elaborating on the long-term biological consequences, the Kilkeel Angling Club warned that the incident could have serious consequences for the river's salmon and sea trout populations for many years to come. The club emphasized that the Kilkeel River is an important local watercourse and wildlife habitat.

Highlighting the extensive community efforts invested in the area, the Kilkeel Angling Club noted that their club and its members have invested a great deal of time and voluntary effort in protecting and improving it, which makes the extent of this damage particularly difficult to comprehend.

Expressing the unprecedented nature of the environmental crisis, David Crozier stated that it is the worst pollution incident he remembers on this river. Furthermore, Mr. Crozier remarked that it is the biggest fish kill any of them remember in south Down for decades, according to information shared with BBC News NI.
