Scientific evaluations have long examined the common human habit of cracking finger joints and its potential relation to arthritis and other health effects. While many people routinely crack their fingers without giving it a second thought, medical researchers have investigated what actually happens inside the human body when these joints are manipulated and whether the practice causes long-term physical damage.

To understand the mechanics of the habit, scientists have looked closely at the physiological process that occurs when fingers are twisted or pulled. According to scientific findings, cracking a finger causes the pressure of the synovial fluid inside the joint to decrease significantly. This pressure drop leads to the formation of small gas bubbles, the collapse or release of which creates the characteristic cracking or popping sound that people hear.

Further analysis of the sound itself has quantified just how loud this bodily phenomenon can be. Scientific measurements taken during research into the habit revealed that the intensity of a single joint-cracking sound can reach up to approximately 83 decibels. This provides a precise acoustic measurement for a sound that is commonly experienced in daily life but rarely measured in a laboratory setting.

One of the most notable personal experiments on this subject was conducted by Donald Unger. He cracked the joints of his left hand at least twice a day for approximately 50 years while leaving his right hand completely untouched as a control. Over the course of five decades, the joints in his left hand were cracked roughly 36,500 times. In 1998, at the age of 72, he underwent X-rays of both hands and found no evidence of arthritis in either of them.

Medical literature also includes several broader studies looking into the practice. A 1975 study gathered data from 28 individuals who routinely cracked their joints. Later, a 1990 study examined 74 people with a long-standing history of the habit. Additionally, researchers analyzed 215 patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis, and yet another study was published in 2017 to further explore the topic.
