Rare Woody Climber 'Banorkola' Discovered in Forests Across Bangladesh

A rare woody climber plant known locally as Banorkola has been the subject of recent scientific examination in Bangladesh. Scientifically classified as Uvaria hamiltonii and commonly referred to in English as the Eastern Uvaria, this unique climbing plant is a member of the Annonaceae botanical family.

Field observations and botanical studies indicate that the species thrives in various forested and hilly areas throughout Bangladesh. Confirmed locations where the plant has been documented include Modhupur, Rema-Kalenga, Chokoria, Sherpur, Mymensingh, and the capital city of Dhaka.

Botanical characteristics of Uvaria hamiltonii show that the woody climber typically grows to considerable heights, measuring between 10 to 15 metres. Additionally, the habitats where this rare climber is discovered are situated at elevations ranging from 300 to 600 metres.

Laboratory analysis of Banorkola has revealed significant biochemical properties within the plant. Researchers have successfully identified various types of effective active compounds, specifically noting the presence of potent steroids and alkaloids.

Academic institutions in the country, including Bangladesh Agricultural University and the University of Dhaka, have been associated with the ongoing study and documentation of the plant. These findings provide crucial insights into the ecological distribution and chemical composition of the Eastern Uvaria.
