Rare White Park Cows Introduced to Castle Howard Estate for Rewilding
A herd of rare White Park cows has been introduced to the Castle Howard Estate in North Yorkshire. The release forms part of a major 30-year conservation project across a 440-acre site.
A heritage herd of White Park cows, described by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust as likely the most ancient native cattle in the British Isles, has been successfully introduced to the historic Castle Howard Estate located in North Yorkshire, United Kingdom. This significant animal arrival forms a central component of the ambitious 30-year Bog Hall rewilding scheme, which aims to transform the local landscape and restore native biodiversity across the designated region.
Spanning an expansive 440 acres situated directly within the Howardian Hills National Landscape, the extensive nature restoration initiative is being delivered in an official partnership with the biodiversity research organisation Environment Bank. To prepare the expansive site for the arrival of the livestock, conservation volunteers have been hard at work establishing new wildlife features by creating ponds and planting willow throughout the designated land, alongside installing three miles (5km) of fencing.
Guy Thallon, speaking about the ongoing environmental efforts, described the initiative as inspiring for the whole Castle Howard team and beyond, while noting that the arrival of the cattle is truly exciting. Thallon added that they can't wait to see the positive impact of nature's engineers in the coming years, noting that these animals are precisely what they would like to see in the Bog Hall Habitat Bank project in the future.
According to the estate, the presence of the heritage cattle will specifically help create a more varied habitat structure across the terrain. Fraser Rutherford highlighted that local students will have a rare opportunity to follow nature restoration throughout their school years and see firsthand how native wildlife returns to a landscape that is actively being managed for ecological recovery.
The current introduction of the ancient cattle herd marks a major milestone for the conservation project, which officially began in 2024. Following the integration of the White Park cows into the 440-acre landscape, the estate and its partner organisations have already confirmed that there are further plans to release beavers in the autumn.
