OpenAI Acquires Smartphone Camera Maker Glass Imaging
OpenAI has purchased Los Altos-based smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging, a startup founded by former Apple engineers in 2019. The acquisition follows OpenAI's previous high-profile purchase of Jony Ive's company io for $6.5 billion in 2025.

Artificial intelligence pioneer OpenAI has completed the acquisition of smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging, according to reports. The transaction brings the specialized imaging technology firm into the rapidly expanding corporate ecosystem of OpenAI as the artificial intelligence giant continues to broaden its hardware and technological capabilities.
Glass Imaging is based in Los Altos, California, where the company established its operations following its founding in 2019. Prior to its acquisition by OpenAI, the innovative camera technology startup had successfully raised about $30 million in funding to develop and advance its sophisticated smartphone imaging systems.
The company was originally established by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, both of whom previously worked as engineers at Apple. Their expertise in optical engineering and smartphone camera technology formed the foundational core of Glass Imaging before the startup attracted significant industry attention and subsequent financial backing.
This corporate acquisition represents another major structural move for OpenAI in the hardware and device space. Earlier in 2025, OpenAI notably purchased Jony Ive's company for a staggering $6.5 billion to support a new hardware venture specifically operating under the name io.
As OpenAI integrates the operations, technology, and talent from Glass Imaging, industry observers and financial publications such as The Wall Street Journal and TechCrunch continue to monitor the artificial intelligence leader's hardware ambitions. Neither organization has yet disclosed further financial terms regarding the specific valuation of the Glass Imaging purchase, aside from the historical context of the startup's previous funding rounds.
