New stem group insect species Chosha praecursor discovered in Texas
Researchers have identified a new stem group insect species named Chosha praecursor dating back approximately 324 million years. The fossils were discovered in calcareous claystone concretions within the Marathon Uplift in western Texas.

An international team of researchers has successfully identified a previously unknown stem group insect species originating from the Late Mississippian period. This significant paleontological find centers around a newly named species designated as Chosha praecursor, which dates back approximately 324 million years. The discovery sheds new light on the broader study of early insect evolution and helps researchers piece together the complex history of ancient terrestrial ecosystems during this distant geological epoch.
The physical remains of Chosha praecursor were unearthed from calcareous claystone concretions located within the Tesnus Formation. This specific geological site is situated in the Marathon Uplift region in western Texas, United States. Detailed examination of the fossilized specimens revealed several distinct anatomical features that provide crucial insights into the morphology of early stem group insects that inhabited the region during the Late Mississippian period.
According to the research findings, Chosha praecursor possessed a segmented trunk alongside six functional walking legs. Furthermore, the anatomical analysis of the newly described species documented the presence of a specialized ovipositor and a terminal caudal filament. These physical characteristics contribute significantly to our understanding of the structural diversity and biological adaptations present among early insect lineages over three hundred million years ago.
The international research effort behind this discovery involves scientists from prominent scientific institutions, including the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, also referred to as NIGPAS, as well as the University of Cambridge. Key researchers contributing to the identification and study of Chosha praecursor include Chenyang Cai and Erik Tihelka, whose collaborative work continues to advance the scientific documentation of early insect evolution.
