Middle East Crude Oil Exports Fall in August Amid Strait of Hormuz Closures

Crude oil exports from the Middle East remained severely restricted in August, staying well below pre-war levels as the strategic Strait of Hormuz faced continued closure. According to data monitored by TankerTrackers and detailed by Al Jazeera, the disruption to maritime traffic in the vital waterway has heavily impacted global energy flows originating from the region throughout the year.

When comparing the recent shipping data to the baseline figures recorded in January and February, the impact of the ongoing crisis becomes starkly evident. During the first two months of the year, before the major escalation and disruptions took full effect, the Middle East consistently exported approximately 1.85 million barrels of crude oil every single day.

However, the subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz caused maritime trade to plummet dramatically, with the most severe contraction occurring during the month of May. At that time, regional crude oil exports experienced a staggering reduction of 67 percent when measured against pre-war volume averages.

Quantifying the volume lost during the peak of the crisis, the data reveals that the export deficit in May reached a massive 12.4 million barrels per day. This unprecedented bottleneck crippled the usual supply chains that connect Middle Eastern producers to international energy markets.

By the month of August, conditions showed some marginal improvement as the export deficit contracted, bringing the shortfall down to 7.2 million barrels per day. Despite this partial recovery, August export volumes still registered a significant 39 percent decline compared to the baseline established in January and February.
