Jashore Market Fined for Selling Indian Hilsa as Local Fish
Authorities in Jashore fined a local fish stall 5,000 taka for passing off imported Indian hilsa as domestic fish. Meanwhile, official data revealed significant hilsa imports through the Benapole land port during the first two months of the fiscal year.
A fish market stall in Jashore's Boro Bazar, known as 'Kornofuli Fish', has been penalized for deceptive business practices involving imported seafood. According to verified reports, the establishment was found to be selling Indian hilsa while falsely claiming to consumers that the fish was of domestic origin.
In response to this consumer deception, a targeted enforcement operation was carried out at the Jashore Boro Bazar. The inspection and subsequent penalty were led by Selimuzzaman, who serves as the assistant director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection in Jashore.
During the operation, the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection officially fined the 'Kornofuli Fish' establishment an amount of 5 thousand taka for the fraudulent labeling and sale of the imported fish as local produce.
Alongside the enforcement action at the market, official data regarding seafood trade was disclosed concerning the Benapole land port. Statistics show that during the first two months of the current 2026-27 financial year, a substantial quantity of hilsa was imported through this specific port.
Specifically, the import volume reached 3 lakh 52 thousand 786 kilograms of hilsa through the Benapole land port over the opening two months. A breakdown of these figures indicates that 3 lakh 23 thousand 346 kilograms of hilsa were imported in August alone, following an earlier importation of 29 thousand 440 kilograms in July.
