Japan has officially welcomed the 2023 Asian Games, marking the third time the country has hosted the prestigious multi-sport event. Previously, Japan hosted the continental games in 1958 and 1994, adding to its rich history of international sporting events which also includes hosting the Olympic Games in 1964 and holding the postponed 2020 Olympic Games in 2021.

This year's edition of the Asian Games features a massive global gathering, centering around 41 distinct sports and a staggering 461 medal events. Historical records from the games indicate a massive expansion in scale from earlier eras, when organizers typically expected just over four thousand athletes, coaches, and officials. In the modern era, the total number of participating athletes alone has continued to climb exponentially, eventually surpassing 17,000 competitors.

A notable logistical change characterizes this year's Asian Games in Japan, as it marks the first time in the history of the event that a traditional games village has not been utilized. Instead, organizers brought in a rented cruise ship from Italy to serve as the floating temporary games village for participants.

Representing South Asia, the Bangladesh contingent has traveled to Japan with a total delegation of approximately two and a half hundred individuals, encompassing athletes, coaches, and officials. In total, the contingent from Bangladesh is scheduled to participate across 22 different sports during the course of the international competition.

Looking back at its historical participation in the continental competition, Bangladesh holds a proud legacy of past achievements. Bangladesh secured its very first medal in the history of the Asian Games through the efforts of Mosharraf Hossain in boxing, while the nation has also famously tasted the ultimate glory of victory by winning a gold medal in cricket.

The scale of participation varies greatly across the continent, with regional delegations bringing large numbers of personnel to compete in the 461 events. For comparison, the delegation from neighboring India has arrived at the international games with a massive squad consisting of five hundred and fifty people.
