Inside Dhaner Shish: The History of a Noakhali Village
Discover the origins and current state of Dhaner Shish village in Subornochar, Noakhali. Learn about its evolution from a newly emerged char into a peaceful community with thousands of residents.
Located approximately 25 kilometres away from the Noakhali district town, Dhaner Shish village is situated within the Subornochar upazila. The area originally emerged as a new char in the 1960s following a significant geographical shift when the old Noakhali town was eroded by the Meghna river in the late 1950s. Before gaining its current designation, the locality was previously known as Porachor.
The settlement of the area began around 1977, when approximately 400 families consisting of landless people from Hatiya and other surrounding regions started settling in the char. However, the early days of the settlement were marked by conflict. In mid-1978, an attack took place involving occupants from the neighboring area of Charlakshmi. This violent incident led to a legal battle and a court case that ultimately resulted in 21 life sentences being handed down.
Following these tumultuous events, then-President Ziaur Rahman visited Hatiya and specifically inquired about Porachor and the welfare of its settlers. Subsequent to the presidential visit, district administration surveys were conducted, and the mouza and resulting village were officially renamed 'Dhaner Shish' in recognition of the history and administrative developments of the area.
Today, Dhaner Shish village is home to a population of approximately 35,000 people, with a registered voter population of about 3,200 residents. The local economy and community life are supported by various establishments, including 12 fish farms and 8 poultry farms operating within the village. Local perspectives highlight the harmony of the area, with Mahmudur Rahman alias Nishan noting that while other areas regularly experience various troubles, the people of this village remain peaceful and everyone coexists together.
Educational infrastructure has also grown significantly since the early settlement days. Mohammadpur Government Primary School was originally established as a private primary school in 1991 before being nationalized. Today, the institution serves a student body of 230 students, providing foundational education to the children living in this unique Noakhali village.
