IFC Provides $30.7M Loan to Popular Pharmaceuticals in Bangladesh
The International Finance Corporation has issued a senior secured loan of 30.7 million US dollars to Popular Pharmaceuticals. The financing aims to support the Bangladeshi pharmaceutical sector, which currently faces an import dependency of approximately 90 percent for active pharmaceutical ingredients.

The International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group, has provided a significant financial boost to the healthcare and manufacturing sector in Bangladesh by granting a senior secured loan totaling three crore seven lakh US dollars, equivalent to 30.7 million US dollars, to Popular Pharmaceuticals. The official announcement regarding this substantial financial agreement was made yesterday, Wednesday, marking a notable development for the country's growing industrial landscape.
Popular Pharmaceuticals currently maintains a robust manufacturing portfolio, producing more than 815 different products. This extensive range of medications plays a vital role in meeting the domestic demand for healthcare treatments and pharmaceutical supplies within Bangladesh, contributing significantly to the accessibility of essential medicines for the local population.
Despite the strong domestic manufacturing capabilities present in the country, the broader pharmaceutical sector in Bangladesh faces a distinct strategic challenge regarding its raw materials. Industry data indicates that the dependency on imports for active pharmaceutical ingredients, commonly known as APIs, stands at approximately 90 percent, highlighting an area of heavy reliance on foreign supply chains.
Dr. Mostafizur Rahman commented on the newly established financial arrangement, emphasizing its strategic importance for the company's corporate trajectory. Regarding the collaboration, Dr. Mostafizur Rahman stated, "The partnership with IFC is an important step in our journey towards the goal of becoming one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in Bangladesh by the year 2030."
This collaboration between the International Finance Corporation and Popular Pharmaceuticals is expected to provide essential support as the company works toward its long-term strategic objectives. By securing this significant funding from the World Bank Group member institution, Popular Pharmaceuticals aims to strengthen its operational capacity within the competitive Bangladeshi pharmaceutical market.
