On September 18, 2026, concerns surrounding artificial intelligence reached a critical juncture across the United States as Hollywood labor unions and industry representatives addressed the growing threat of job displacement. Organizations including the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, also known as SAG-AFTRA, alongside the Writers Guild of America East, or WGAE, have raised serious apprehensions regarding how advanced AI tools could undermine human employment within the entertainment sector. These developments arrive amid broader societal warnings concerning the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and the potential existential risks highlighted by whistleblowers and former industry researchers.

Addressing the implementation of these technologies, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland of SAG-AFTRA emphasized that labor representatives previously took decisive action during negotiations. According to Crabtree-Ireland, the unions successfully bargained for and achieved enforceable, meaningful guardrails around how this technology can be implemented by the major employers in the industry. These protections specifically target the traditional entertainment studios and companies that operate within the domestic professional content creation market across the United States.

However, the scope of these negotiated union protections does not extend directly to every major player in the artificial intelligence sector. Crabtree-Ireland clarified that the existing agreements do not include technology companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google directly. Even so, the guardrails do encompass all of the major traditional companies who have built up businesses around the creation of professional-level entertainment content in the United States, keeping the major Hollywood employers bound by these workforce safety measures.

The broader debate over artificial intelligence has been further amplified by whistleblower warnings and the departure of key technical personnel from leading AI laboratories. Notably, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon made the decision to quit his job, contributing to a growing chorus of warnings regarding the existential risks associated with advanced AI systems. These technical concerns have intersected directly with the economic anxieties of creative professionals, creating a tense landscape where labor organizations are closely monitoring the technological trajectory pushed by major tech developers.

Amid these escalating tensions and warnings, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland did not hold back in his assessment of the corporate leadership driving the technological shift. He stated that the recklessness of the tech oligarchs pushing AI on our society has been matched only by their rampant dishonesty. Despite repeated inquiries and requests for comment regarding these existential warnings and labor displacement risks from publication The Verge, major entertainment studios including Disney, Netflix, Amazon, and Lionsgate did not respond.
