German Government Honours Shakil Syed With Engagement Prize for Social Work

Bangladesh social worker Shakil Syed has been honoured with the prestigious Engagement Prize by the German government in recognition of his significant contributions to implementing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals through various social welfare activities. The announcement and presentation of the award took place amid formal ceremonies acknowledging grassroots international contributions.

The award ceremony was officially held last Saturday, September 5, at the headquarters of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), located in the German city of Bonn. The event took place during the ministry's special 'Open Day' programme, drawing attention to vital international solidarity efforts and community-driven development initiatives supported by the government.

During the event in Bonn, development minister Reem Alabali-Radovan formally presented the honours to the recipients. A total of seven individuals received the distinguished Engagement Prize this year for their remarkable dedication, service, and impactful contributions toward international solidarity and cooperation across various global regions.

Highlighting the critical nature of their grassroots efforts, development minister Reem Alabali-Radovan stated that Shakil Syed and the other six honourees have made important contributions to international solidarity and cooperation. She specifically emphasized that their work is exceptionally vital during the current times, noting that nationalism and separatism are on the rise globally while an 'us first' mentality is becoming increasingly prominent.

Among the distinguished group of honourees alongside Shakil Syed were six other individuals, namely Gloria Nyakuye, Julius Latzel, Batia Blankers, Karin Mlodok, Natalia Fiebrig, and Jens Martens. Together, these seven recipients represent a diverse array of global engagement efforts recognized by the German federal ministry.

Shakil Syed has been actively involved in various social welfare activities for more than 20 years, notably establishing and operating primary schools in lagging regions of Bangladesh. His long-term dedication directly contributed to advancing community welfare and supporting the broader objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals within the country.
