Bhola River Yields 2.5kg 'King Ilish' Sold at Auction for Tk 15,000
A massive 2.5-kilogram 'King Ilish' caught in the Meghna River was auctioned for Tk 15,000 at a local fish landing station in Bhola. The prized catch was subsequently resold right at the jetty to a Dhaka-based buyer for Tk 20,000.

A remarkably large 'King Ilish' fish, weighing a substantial two and a half kilograms, has been successfully caught in the waters of the Meghna River located within Bhola district. Such heavyweight catches of the national fish invariably attract significant attention from local fishermen, traders, and seafood enthusiasts alike due to their impressive size and exceptional market value.
Following its capture from the river, the prized 2.5-kilogram hilsa was brought directly to the Ramnewaz fish landing station situated in the Monpura upazila of Bhola. This specific coastal trading hub serves as a central marketplace where numerous fishermen and local merchants gather daily to conduct high-stakes transactions involving various marine and riverine catches.
At the Monpura Ramnewaz fish landing station, the massive fish was initially put up for a public auction on Tuesday, September 8. Amid competitive bidding among prospective buyers present at the bustling jetty, the sought-after 'King Ilish' was successfully knocked down and sold for a notable price of 15,000 taka.
However, the journey of the prized fish did not conclude with the initial auction transaction. Shortly after securing the catch at the jetty, the buyer decided to part with it, reselling the exact same 2.5-kilogram hilsa right on the spot to a visiting purchaser hailing from the capital city of Dhaka for an increased price of 20,000 taka.
Shaon Howlader, who participated in these transactions, elaborated on the sequence of events regarding the high-value exchange at the landing station. Providing official commentary on the matter, Shaon Howlader stated: "I bought the fish from the auction for 15,000 taka. Later, I sold it personally for 20,000 taka. I do not want to disclose the identity of the buyer."
This notable event follows a similar occurrence in the region just days prior. Specifically, another colossal 'King Ilish' weighing an identical two and a half kilograms was caught last Friday at the Ilisha Taltoli fish landing station, which is located under the jurisdiction of the Bhola Sadar upazila.
