Gazipur Safari Park leopards confined to quarantine for nine years

Two leopard cubs initially placed in a three-week quarantine at the Gazipur Safari Park have spent nearly nine years confined inside the same shed due to a lack of suitable housing. The prolonged captivity highlights severe infrastructure shortcomings at the wildlife facility.

Authorities at the Gazipur Safari Park originally placed two leopard cubs into a specialized quarantine facility for a strictly limited duration of just three weeks. What was intended as a brief and temporary isolation period for health monitoring has unexpectedly transformed into a permanent situation of confinement for the animals.

Due to a continuous lack of proper and suitable permanent housing infrastructure within the grounds of the Gazipur Safari Park, the necessary relocation of the growing leopards could not be carried out as originally planned by the wildlife management authorities.

Consequently, the absence of appropriate enclosures and proper captive habitats has forced the two leopards to spend nearly nine years of their lives entirely confined within the narrow and restrictive environment of the original quarantine shed.

This prolonged confinement in a temporary holding area sheds light on significant logistical and infrastructural limitations faced by the Gazipur Safari Park in providing adequate, long-term living spaces for large predators under its care.

Wildlife experts note that keeping large felids in temporary quarantine structures for nearly nine years falls severely short of international animal welfare standards, raising ongoing concerns regarding animal management practices at the Gazipur Safari Park facility.
