Gas Crisis Halts Production Across Chattogram Industrial Areas
Severe gas shortages in Chattogram have forced numerous factories to shut down and slashed production rates in half. Officials warn the crisis will persist until terminal repairs are completed and new LNG shipments arrive.
A severe gas supply crisis is crippling the industrial sector in Chattogram, affecting key manufacturing hubs including the Bayezid, Oxygen, and Kalurghat areas. According to verified reports from the region, the acute shortage of gas has brought many small and large industrial factories to a complete standstill, while numerous other manufacturing facilities are struggling to operate at only half of their usual production capacity.
Data provided by the Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL) highlights the stark deficit between the region's energy needs and current supply levels. The state utility states that the total daily demand for gas in Chattogram stands at approximately 370 million cubic feet. Under normal operating conditions, the local grid typically receives between 250 million and 260 million cubic feet to support industrial and domestic consumption.
However, the ongoing supply constraints have driven deliveries down dramatically. KGDCL statistics confirm that current gas supply levels to the region have plummeted to a mere 190 million to 200 million cubic feet, falling far short of what is required to keep local industries functioning at standard operational levels and triggering widespread manufacturing disruptions.
Addressing the outlook for the region, Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL) has indicated that there is little likelihood of an immediate improvement in the existing energy situation. The utility noted that the crisis is expected to persist until technical faults at the Moheshkhali terminal are fully repaired and new liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo shipments arrive in the country.
