Floating island spotted near shore in British Columbia's Williston Reservoir

A remarkable and unusual natural phenomenon has captured attention in British Columbia, Canada, after a small, floating island was first spotted by boaters in mid-August on the vast Williston Reservoir. The floating mass, which consists of accumulated debris and organic material, quickly became a point of fascination as it drifted across the remote northern waters.

According to official measurements, the unusual island is approximately 9,800 square metres in size, which is equivalent to about one hectare. To help visualize the sheer scale of the floating phenomenon, experts note that it measures about the size of one Canadian football field, or roughly one-and-a-half American football fields.

Following its initial discovery by boaters in mid-August, officials temporarily lost track of the floating island when it disappeared from satellite images. However, the mass was eventually located again near the shore, approximately 30 kilometres, or 18.6 miles, away from the exact location where it was first spotted on the Williston Reservoir.

BC Hydro, the organization monitoring the situation, has provided an explanation for how this geological oddity came to exist in the remote Canadian waterway. Officials believe that the island formed over many years from accumulating driftwood and eventually broke off completely from the shoreline as water levels rose within the reservoir.

Because the Williston Reservoir region is extremely remote and most people will never come near it, authorities have emphasized the importance of safety for anyone who might happen to encounter the drifting mass. Officials have issued a clear warning to the public, advising individuals to stay off the island because it could easily break apart.
