BRICS Leaders Gather in Delhi for High-Stakes Summit Amid Tariff Threats

Leaders representing 11 BRICS nations are currently holding high-level talks at a major summit taking place in Delhi, India, this weekend. The gathering brings together representatives from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, the UAE, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, and Indonesia as the bloc convenes to discuss international cooperation and economic strategy.

The economic and demographic footprint of the bloc is vast. According to detailed analysis from BBC Monitoring, the 11 nations combined account for a staggering 49 percent of the world's population. Furthermore, the organization represents 40 percent of global gross domestic product and commands 26 percent of all international trade.

However, the summit in Delhi unfolds under the shadow of severe external pressures, most notably from the United States. Donald Trump issued a stern warning in November 2024, declaring that BRICS countries would face 100 percent tariffs if they attempted to back an alternative currency to replace the US dollar.

Michael Kugelman, an analyst from the Atlantic Council, highlighted the delicate geopolitical balancing act required during the summit. Noting the internal friction within the expanded bloc, Kugelman observed that "you've added a number of members that don't get along."

Kugelman also emphasized the diplomatic constraints facing the host nation regarding relations with Washington. He stated that "India cannot afford to have a joint statement that rails against Washington," underscoring the complex negotiations taking place behind closed doors in the Indian capital.
