BCB and COAB Meet in Mirpur Over BPL Cancellation and Domestic Cricket
The Bangladesh Cricket Board and players' organization COAB have held discussions in Mirpur following the cancellation of the BPL. Officials and players addressed the financial impact and proposed domestic cricket improvements.
Cricket officials and players convened in Mirpur, Dhaka, today for a crucial meeting between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the Cricketers' Welfare Association of Bangladesh (COAB). This gathering marks the second meeting between the two organizations within a span of just three days, highlighting the urgency of ongoing discussions regarding the current state of domestic cricket.
The central topic of discussion was the confirmed cancellation of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). It has been established that the BPL will not take place, and furthermore, no alternative tournament will be organized to replace it during this period.
Addressing the implications of the cancellation, cricketer Saif Hasan acknowledged the impact during discussions. He stated that since the BPL is not happening, it is certainly a loss for them. However, he noted that the BCB has laid out a very good future plan for them, which will be beneficial not only for BPL players but for all domestic cricket players.
Mohammad Mithun also provided candid remarks regarding the financial realities and the lack of a replacement tournament. He stated that since the BPL is not happening, the current situation does not allow for anything alternative to be done to compensate players for that loss, and such a replacement will not happen. He emphasized that nothing else is taking place in place of the BPL.
Elaborating on the broader strategic vision, Mithun explained the rationale behind focusing on a wider talent pool rather than immediate, short-term fixes. He stated that instead of thinking only about 50 to 70 players, they have made a decision on how 150 to 200 players can benefit in the future and how the matter can be made sustainable. He added that rather than thinking about temporary benefits for this year, they have thought about the future so that the next generation of players can benefit even more.
In response to the players' concerns and the broader economic adjustments, the BCB has offered specific commitments aimed at improving domestic competitions. The board has promised to nearly double the match fees for the National Cricket League and the Bangladesh Cricket League. This financial adjustment will be officially announced following formal approval from the upcoming board meeting.
