Batteries overtake gas for evening peak power in Australia

Australia's dependence on gas generation during the critical evening energy peak fell significantly as batteries surged into the power grid, according to data from August 2026. This remarkable transition highlights a major shift in how the nation generates and manages its electricity during times of peak demand.
According to quarterly data released by the Australian Energy Market Operator, also known as AEMO, gas generation recorded its lowest second quarter on average in more than two decades. This downward trend was further illustrated by specific figures showing that gas generation during the busy early evening, between 5pm and 8pm, fell by an astonishing 67 percent in the year leading up to August.
Over that same twelve-month period, the contribution of gas to the energy mix fell dramatically from 65.9 percent down to 20.6 percent. Stepping into this gap, batteries met 49 percent of the grid’s dispatchable power needs during the evening in August 2026, representing a massive increase from just 0.4 percent recorded back in 2020.
Industry experts have expressed astonishment at the pace of this technological transition across the country. Josh Stabler from EnergyEdge noted the unprecedented nature of the rollout, stating that the rate of installation of batteries in Australia is the fastest uptake of any electricity asset ever—faster than solar, faster than wind.
Reinforcing this sentiment, Josh Stabler added that batteries have taken the evening peak, and they’re not giving it back. Alongside these sweeping changes to the generation mix, wholesale electricity prices fell in direct response to the integration of battery storage into the wider network.
