Bangladeshi Filmmakers and Artists Trapped in Nepal Amid Deadly Floods
Severe floods and landslides in Nepal have severely disrupted communications, trapping several Bangladeshi artists and crew members. While some have managed to return home safely, others remain stranded as the death toll approaches 600.
A film crew and several cultural figures from Bangladesh found themselves trapped in Nepal following a series of devastating natural disasters that struck the Himalayan nation. Heavy and relentless rainfall triggered widespread floods and catastrophic landslides across the region, severely paralyzing critical infrastructure and disrupting normal communication networks. The unfolding humanitarian crisis has left communities reeling, with official statistics indicating that the death toll is nearing 600, while approximately two thousand people remain missing amidst the wreckage.
Among those caught in the precarious situation was prominent Bangladeshi film actress Apu Biswas, who had traveled to Nepal specifically for the production of an upcoming movie titled 'Shikar'. Despite the perilous conditions and the logistical nightmares caused by the blocked and destroyed roadways, Biswas confirmed that she and her team managed to navigate the ordeal without facing any major life-threatening emergencies. Providing immense relief to her fans and family, the actress successfully completed her journey back to Dhaka, arriving safely on Friday night.
Reflecting on her harrowing experience abroad and her eventual relief upon touching down in her home country, Apu Biswas stated, "While we were in Nepal, we did not face any major problems. It feels peaceful to finally be able to return home safely." Her safe arrival marks a rare positive development in what has been a deeply concerning situation for the Bangladeshi creative community members currently abroad.
However, the crisis has affected others differently, requiring arduous journeys to escape the affected zones. Indian actor Kharaj Mukherjee and his wife, Pratibha, had also traveled to Pokhara for shooting engagements when the natural disaster struck without warning. Trapped by the sudden onslaught of floods and landslides, Mukherjee described having to navigate a litany of severe challenges just to reach Gorakhpur before they could finally secure passage back to Kolkata.
Detailing the difficulties of his escape route, Kharaj Mukherjee explained, "I and my wife Pratibha had gone to Pokhara for shooting work. After the natural disaster, we had to go through various problems to reach Gorakhpur. From there, we finally returned to Kolkata." In addition to these harrowing accounts, ongoing reports confirm that Bangladeshi musical artist Tasrif Khan is still currently trapped in Nepal as rescue and recovery efforts continue under extremely difficult circumstances.
