Bangladesh Showbiz Backlash Over Legal Notice Targeting Romance Films

A legal notice has been sent to relevant government authorities and the Chairman of the Bangladesh Film Censor Board, demanding strict restrictions on the production and broadcasting of romance-based films and dramas. The legal action was initiated by a Supreme Court lawyer on Thursday, 27 August, sparking intense discussions and a major backlash across the country's entertainment sector.

In response to the development, seven organizations related to the television industry jointly issued a statement expressing deep concern and vehemently protesting the legal notice. These prominent organizations include the Directors Guild Bangladesh, Obhinoy Shilpi Shongho Bangladesh, Television Natyokar Shongho, Cameramen Association of Bangladesh, Audio-Visual Technical Owners Association, Television Assistant Directors Organisation of Bangladesh, and the Bangladesh Makeup Artist Association.

The controversy has also prompted strong reactions from individual showbiz personalities. Actress Shabnam Faria humorously and critically commented on the situation, stating, 'Fortunately, I am not of the age to do romantic dramas! I have no tension! From now on, there will only be dramas about illicit affairs! Or stories where a husband has four wives, they roam around together, eat and TikTok, or stories of theft, robbery, extortion, hijacking, or from now on only boys can act in dramas! Girls should quit this acting, buy seafood from the market, cook it, and serve it on the table!'

Director Kaushik Shankar Das reflected on his past career in the wake of the notice, noting, 'Once upon a time, making romantic dramas brought both fame and infamy. Fame because ordinary viewers loved the dramas very much. And infamy because intellectual viewers and creators thought that making these 'cheap' dramas was very easy and they did not give us two cents of respect. Good or bad, whatever it was—fortunately, no one sent us a legal notice back then!'

Meanwhile, actor Adnan Faruque Hillol dismissed the attention surrounding the legal challenge, offering a blunt assessment of the situation. He remarked, 'Some mad person has sent this notice just to become popular, and all of us are busy discussing it to make that mad person even more popular.'

The collective resistance from artists, directors, writers, and technical associations highlights the deep anxiety within the Bangladeshi entertainment industry over potential censorship targeting romance-based storytelling. As discussions continue, stakeholders from the various television and film organizations remain united in their opposition to the restrictions demanded in the Supreme Court lawyer's notice.
