In a decisive move to strengthen the nation's energy security, the government has officially undertaken an extensive initiative to significantly expand the processing capacity of the Eastern Refinery. Under this newly announced development plan, the refinery's operational capacity will be dramatically increased from its current level of 1.5 million metric tons to an impressive 4.5 million metric tons. This critical administrative and infrastructural decision was formally detailed during proceedings held at the Secretariat in Dhaka on the 8th of September, as documented in official information releases.

Addressing the broader context of the nation's energy sector during these announcements, Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman highlighted the multifaceted nature of the country's ongoing energy challenges. He explicitly noted that the country's persistent energy security problems are not solely confined to natural gas shortages alone. According to Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, the government encountered severe operational pressures regarding the consistent supply of liquid fuels, particularly diesel, petrol, and octane, immediately after assuming responsibility.

To successfully execute this massive capacity expansion and secure the necessary financial backing, formal arrangements have been put into place. Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman confirmed that an official agreement has already been finalized and executed with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) to secure the required project financing. This international partnership with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) is expected to provide the vital monetary foundation needed to drive the refinery upgrades forward without unnecessary financial delays.

Building upon this secured international funding and the strategic importance of the infrastructure overhaul, the administration remains highly optimistic about the timeline of the undertaking. Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman stated that the government is actively expecting the entire project to be advanced and implemented in a swift manner. Through these coordinated efforts at the Secretariat in Dhaka, authorities are pushing forward to ensure that the expanded Eastern Refinery facilities will soon alleviate historical liquid fuel pressures.
