The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) is currently in the process of forming a dedicated inter-agency steering committee operating under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This strategic organizational development is specifically designed to prevent and combat trade-based money laundering within the country. By establishing this collaborative framework, authorities seek to unite various regulatory and enforcement bodies to address illicit financial flows tied to commercial transactions.

As part of the preparatory steps for this initiative, a crucial meeting involving relevant public and private sector stakeholders was convened on Sunday by the BFIU. The high-level gathering served as a comprehensive forum to discuss the multifaceted risks, operational challenges, and overall coordination required to effectively counter trade-based money laundering activities in Bangladesh.

A broad spectrum of key representatives from vital regulatory, investigative, and financial institutions actively participated in the Sunday meeting. Attendees included officials from Bangladesh Bank, the National Board of Revenue through its Central Intelligence Cell (CIC), and the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID). Additionally, delegates from various custom houses were present to contribute their frontline perspectives on trade oversight.

The collaborative discussions further drew participation from specialized law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies, including Bangladesh Police, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Alongside these governmental and regulatory bodies, representatives from 15 scheduled banks also took part in the deliberations, highlighting the essential involvement of the commercial banking sector in the proposed Public-Private Partnership framework.

Through the formation of the new inter-agency steering committee, the participating organizations intend to streamline intelligence sharing and enforcement actions. This concerted approach is expected to bolster the national capacity to detect, investigate, and deter complex financial crimes disguised as legitimate international trade operations across Bangladesh.
