Apple first introduced essential emergency features to its iOS operating system back in 2014, establishing a foundation for personal safety tools on mobile devices. Over the subsequent years, the technology company has continued to expand these capabilities, ensuring that iPhone users have reliable methods to seek help during critical situations. These built-in tools are designed to be accessible quickly and efficiently when every second counts for individuals facing emergencies.

One of the primary safety features available to users is the Medical ID, which can be easily created or edited on any iPhone directly through the Health app. This digital medical profile allows individuals to store vital health information, emergency contacts, and medical conditions directly on their devices. First responders and medical personnel can access this crucial data even when the iPhone is locked, helping them make informed decisions during medical incidents.

In addition to health profiles, Apple has implemented the Emergency SOS system, which allows users to summon help using specific physical button combinations on their devices. An Emergency SOS can be activated by holding down the Side button alongside either of the Volume buttons. Alternatively, users can trigger the alert by rapidly pressing the Side button five times. However, despite the physical customization options available on newer models, the Emergency SOS function cannot be activated via the Action Button.

For users who find themselves in remote locations without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, Apple has introduced advanced connectivity solutions for newer hardware. iPhone 14 and all subsequent newer models are equipped with the capability to send emergency messages via satellite. Furthermore, these modern devices can initiate emergency phone calls even when traditional mobile network service is completely unavailable, bridging a critical communication gap in wilderness or disaster zones.
