Ancient 5,000-Year-Old Wooden Structure Discovered Near Stonehenge
Archaeologists have uncovered a simpler wooden structure in Bulford that predates Stonehenge by 500 years. The site features two post holes accurately aligned with the solstices.

Archaeologists working in Bulford, located in the United Kingdom, have made a remarkable discovery of an earlier, simpler structure made of two post holes situated about 3 miles (5km) away from the world-famous Stonehenge monument. Through radiocarbon dating, experts have determined that the site is approximately 5,000 years old, meaning it predates the iconic stone circle by some 500 years. The groundbreaking find was investigated by specialists from organizations including Wessex Archaeology, English Heritage, Bournemouth University, and Skyscape Academy, with coverage featured across BBC Science and BBC News.
Excavations at the Bulford location yielded a variety of significant artefacts, including pottery, flint tools, a red deer antler, and carved animal bones. Among the physical remains uncovered at the site, archaeologists identified evidence of two massive wooden posts positioned between 120m (394ft) and 120m (400ft) apart. These ancient timbers stood impressively between 2m and 4m high and measured half a metre wide, showcasing remarkable construction techniques from the Neolithic era that impressed veteran fieldworkers on the project team.
Reflecting on the excavation results, archaeologist Phil Harding of Wessex Archaeology shared his enthusiasm for the physical remains uncovered during the dig. 'Two post pits tell me more about the people 5,000 years ago,' Harding explained, adding that 'this tells me about the whole community, this tells me about how they were thinking, how they were behaving, how they were revering the heavens.' Harding also recalled noticing a geometric pattern during his analysis, stating, 'I got my pencil and ruler, and I joined them up, and I was aware that they were kind of pointing in the general direction of the sunrise on midsummer.'
To rigorously test these geometric alignments, Dr Fabio Silva of Bournemouth University was brought in to analyze how the sky appeared during the Neolithic period. Explaining the complexities of celestial mapping, Dr Silva noted that 'the sky - the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars - they change very slowly throughout the centuries. We don't really notice it during our lifetimes.' Consequently, Dr Silva stated that 'we basically need to reconstruct the sky, what it looked like exactly 5,000 years ago, where the Sun was rising and what time it was rising in those places.' Crucially, Dr Silva concluded that 'if you take into account the width of the posts… then the alignment is exactly, exactly right. It's accurately aligned to summer solstice sunrise and winter solstice sunset.'
Further elaborating on the significance of the artefacts and the physical effort involved in the project, Harding described the site as 'our star find' and emphasized that 'what is so special about it is the workmanship that's gone into it. That is the work of real craftsmanship.' He also mused on the symbolic nature of the recovered objects, questioning whether 'that discoidal shape is some sort of reference to the Sun, who knows?' Meanwhile, Dr Jennifer Wexler of English Heritage provided broader historical context regarding the builders, stating that 'the discovery of Bulford actually suggests that maybe the people who built the first stages of Stonehenge were based or living there, or at least gathering seasonally to do the construction work at Stonehenge.' Dr Wexler added that 'the people who built Stonehenge and the people who were at Bulford were early farmers, and their livelihoods really were connected to the seasons and the Sun doing its job.'
