Amnesty Details Police Crackdown on Medical Exam Protests in India

Amnesty International has published a new report detailing the heavy-handed police response to demonstrations in New Delhi and Bihar, India. The protests erupted following widespread controversies surrounding the leaking of question papers for medical entrance examinations. The unrest intensified significantly on July 20, when the demonstrations turned violent as participants attempted to march toward the national parliament building, prompting security forces to intervene and block their path.

According to the findings confirmed in the Amnesty International report, law enforcement agencies in Delhi and Bihar deployed aggressive crowd-control tactics against the demonstrators. The documented measures included the use of pellet-firing shotguns, tear gas, sound grenades, heavy batons, and electric shock devices. These actions by security forces have drawn intense scrutiny and widespread public debate regarding the handling of civil unrest and citizens' rights to peaceful assembly in the country.

The intense wave of protests and subsequent political fallout had immediate consequences within the central government. Under mounting pressure from the widespread demonstrations and public outcry over the medical exam question paper leaks, India's Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Prasad, was ultimately forced to resign from his official position.

Political figures also engaged directly with the unfolding crisis on the ground. Notably, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi participated in a sit-in protest outside a police station in Delhi. There, he stood in solidarity with a 19-year-old injured demonstrator who had been affected by the turbulent events surrounding the capital's protests.
