AmCen Celebrates 30 Years in Dhaka with Calls for Energy Roadmap

The American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh, commonly known as AmCem, officially marked its 30th founding anniversary with a grand celebration held last Saturday. The milestone event took place at the Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden, located in the capital city of Dhaka, bringing together prominent business leaders, diplomats, and government officials to commemorate three decades of bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

The anniversary celebration featured high-ranking dignitaries from both the government of Bangladesh and the diplomatic community. Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, the Honorable Commerce Minister, graced the occasion as the chief guest. Meanwhile, Brent T. Christensen, the United States Ambassador to Bangladesh, attended the landmark event as the special guest, underscoring the strong economic ties between the United States and Bangladesh.

During the celebratory gathering, key discussions centered on strategies to significantly enhance foreign direct investment from the United States over the coming years. Notably, the government expressed its firm commitment to supporting AmCem's ambitious initiative aimed at attracting an additional five billion US dollars, equivalent to five billion dollars in foreign direct investment, over the next five years.

To facilitate a more robust business environment and sustain this projected surge in foreign investment, speakers at the event strongly urged the formulation of a comprehensive and definitive energy-related roadmap spanning the next two years. A reliable and structured energy framework is widely viewed as essential for supporting industrial growth and expanding operations for multinational and local enterprises alike.

Syed Mohammad Kamal, a prominent business figure associated with the chamber, emphasized the vast potential for collaboration between the public sector and international enterprises. He explicitly stated during the event that the government can more actively utilize the global expertise, advanced technology, professional knowledge, and institutional capabilities possessed by AmCem and its member institutions.

The anniversary event also saw active participation and representation from several leading corporate entities and financial institutions operating in the region. Organizations such as Metlife Bangladesh, Excelerate Energy Bangladesh, and Standard Chartered Bank were prominently involved, highlighting the collaborative spirit and strong private-sector partnership underpinning AmCem's ongoing mission in Bangladesh.
