World Letter Day Marks Tagore's Extensive Correspondence

World Letter Day is observed annually on September 1, marking an occasion to reflect on the traditions of personal correspondence and historical letter-writing. In connection with this observance, discussions have focused on the vast epistolary legacy of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, specifically exploring the letters he penned throughout his lifetime to various correspondents.

Among his vast body of correspondence, Rabindranath Tagore wrote the highest number of letters during his lifetime to Nirmalkumari Mahalanobis, affectionately known as Rani. Historical records indicate that Nirmalkumari Mahalanobis received her very first letter from the poet in 1925, while the final letter in their correspondence was sent on June 8, 1941, just months before his passing 85 years ago.

The deep personal connection reflected in these writings is underscored by Tagore's own reflections on letter-writing and autobiography. He once famously remarked, "You will not find the poet in a poet's biography," and noted that his joys, sorrows, and days and nights were woven into his letters in a way that neither his prose nor his poetry captured quite the same way.

Scholarly efforts have continued to preserve and publish these historical documents for contemporary readers. Notably, a comprehensive 511-page collection of letters titled 'Nijer Katha' has been compiled and edited by Amitrasudan Bhattacharya, and subsequently published by Mitra and Ghosh Publishers, bringing these archival materials into the public sphere.

Historical records also highlight the primary recipients of Tagore's extensive correspondence network. Alongside Nirmalkumari Mahalanobis, the women who received the highest volume of letters from the poet were Indira Devi Chaudhurani, Ranu Mukherjee, and Hemantibala Devi, forming a vital historical record of his interpersonal relationships.
