The West Bengal state government has announced the creation of the new 'Arjun Force' emergency unit to be deployed in the Sunderbans and mountainous regions. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari made the announcement on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

The West Bengal state government has officially announced the formation of a brand-new emergency unit named the 'Arjun Force', which is specifically designated for deployment in the ecologically sensitive Sunderban region as well as the hilly areas of the state. According to the information provided by the Anandabazar Patrika media outlet, this strategic security and emergency initiative was formally declared by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, in West Bengal, India.
In its initial phase, the newly established Arjun Force will comprise a total personnel strength of 200 individuals. Recruitment for these positions is strictly restricted to former members of the Indian military who have taken early retirement and are under the age of 40 years. Furthermore, the state government has explicitly confirmed that participants of the Agniveer scheme will be given priority during the selection and recruitment process for this specialized emergency force.
The administrative deployment plan for the initial 200 personnel is structured to cover high-risk and strategic zones across the state. Out of the total strength, 100 personnel will be stationed directly in Kolkata, another 100 personnel will be deployed to monitor and manage security in the hill regions, and 50 personnel will be specifically assigned to operate within the challenging terrain of the Sunderban area.
To ensure financial stability for those serving in the newly formed emergency unit, the state government has established a clear monthly salary structure. The commanding head of the Arjun Force will receive a fixed monthly salary of 40,000 rupees, while the general members of the force will be compensated with a monthly salary of 25,000 rupees. Additionally, all employed personnel are guaranteed a 3 percent annual increment on their salaries.
Comprehensive welfare and compensation policies have also been instituted to protect the members of the Arjun Force during active duty. In the unfortunate event of a fatality in the line of duty, financial assistance amounting to 10 lakh rupees will be provided. Additionally, compensation of 5 lakh rupees has been designated for personnel who suffer severe injuries leading to permanent physical disability.
