Vegetable and Fish Prices Surge Across Barishal Markets in a Week
Vegetable and fish prices have risen significantly across markets in Barishal over the span of a single week. Local residents are facing increased costs for daily essentials as supplies dwindle due to market dynamics.
A recent market survey conducted in Barishal on September 14, 2026, reveals that the prices of all types of vegetables have experienced a noticeable surge over the period of just one week. According to reports from the area, consumers are now facing an increase of 10 to 30 Taka per kilogram across various vegetable categories. This sudden upward tick in market prices has placed an additional financial burden on local households who rely on these daily commodities for their nutritional needs.
Specific vegetable items have seen sharp price adjustments since the previous week. Green chili, which was retailing at 80 Taka per kilogram last week, is now being sold at 110 to 120 Taka per kilogram. Other staples have followed a similar upward trajectory, with potol priced at 70 to 80 Taka, tomatoes at 100 to 120 Taka, okra at 50 to 60 Taka, and snake gourd at 60 to 80 Taka per kilogram. Furthermore, smooth loofah is selling for 80 Taka, ridge loofah for 100 Taka, bitter gourd for 70 to 80 Taka, eggplant for 80 to 100 Taka, and yardlong beans for 100 Taka per kilogram in local markets.
Additional vegetable varieties are also commanding higher prices across Barishal. Gourds are priced at 50 to 60 Taka, raw papaya at 35 to 40 Taka, ripe sweet pumpkin at 55 to 60 Taka, spiny gourd at 80 to 100 Taka, and taro stolons at 50 to 60 Taka per kilogram. Addressing this ongoing market situation, Aminul Islam Shuvo explained the underlying cause behind the price fluctuations. He stated that prices rise whenever the adequate supply of vegetables decreases, noting that while rain caused prices to be somewhat higher previously before dropping, the current low supply is driving costs up and prices will fall once supply increases.
Alongside vegetables, the meat and fish sectors are experiencing notable price shifts in Barishal. The price of fish has gone up by 50 to 150 Taka per kilogram due to a scarcity in the supply of river fish, which has consequently driven up both the demand and price for farmed fish. In the specific case of shrimp, prices have reached up to 1,350 Taka per kilogram. Meanwhile, poultry prices show mixed figures as broiler chicken sells for 165 to 170 Taka, layer chicken for 365 Taka, and Sonali chicken for 290 Taka per kilogram, while beef and mutton prices have remained completely unchanged.
