US Envoy Discusses FSRU Investment and Energy Cooperation in Dhaka
US Ambassador Brent T. Christensen met with Commerce, Industry and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir in Dhaka. The discussions focused on US investment in Bangladesh's FSRU project, bilateral trade, and broader energy cooperation.
United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen held a high-level meeting in Dhaka with Commerce, Industry and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir. The diplomatic engagement took place on Monday at the FBCCI office located in Motijheel, bringing together key government officials and organizational representatives to deliberate on critical economic partnerships.
During the discussions, the American ambassador expressed that the United States is keen to invest in Bangladesh's floating storage and regasification unit, commonly known as the FSRU project. In response to this interest, Commerce, Industry and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir stated that if the FSRU can be implemented rapidly and demonstrate adequate supply capabilities, proposals from American companies will receive the utmost priority from the government.
Highlighting the broader scope of bilateral energy cooperation and trade, the meeting addressed a major energy agreement between the two nations. Bangladesh has officially decided to import a total of 117 liquefied natural gas cargo shipments from the United States spanning a 13-year period from 2026 through 2038.
Minister Muktadir further emphasized the positive structural shifts in the nation's procurement methodologies during the talks. He noted that by creating opportunities to work directly with manufacturing institutions, the purchasing process has successfully regained transparency while simultaneously eliminating the dominance of middlemen.
Addressing the broader economic landscape, US Ambassador Brent T. Christensen underscored the importance of regulatory stability and market conditions for international stakeholders. He remarked that if a transparent and competitive environment is consistently maintained within major infrastructure projects, the confidence of foreign investors will increase further.
The high-profile meeting at the FBCCI office in Motijheel also saw the participation of several other notable figures. Among those present for the deliberations were Abdun Nasser Khan, Md. Mustafizur Rahman, and Angelo Palazzello, alongside representatives from the FBCCI, the Ministry of Commerce, the US Embassy, and Gunvor USA LLC.
