UN Partners With Google to Launch AI-Ready Global Statistics Platform

The United Nations announced on September 17, 2026, that it is working with Google to create the UN System Data Commons, an ambitious platform designed to make global statistics accessible to artificial intelligence systems. Built on Google's open-source Data Commons platform, the newly established initiative supports the Model Context Protocol, known as MCP, to ensure seamless integration for modern AI architectures.

To support the rollout of this technological initiative, Google.org provided $2 million in capacity-building funding alongside essential technical support dedicated to the platform's underlying infrastructure. Shantanu Mukherjee highlighted the unprecedented scale and coordination of the project during the announcement, stating, "We are orders of magnitude more advanced in scale, scope, and flexibility, connecting for the first time across so many agencies across the UN system, and [we are] taking this moment to also make our data AI-ready."

The integration effort features broad institutional participation across the international body. Specifically, 26 of its entities have committed to the Data Commons project, with data from nearly 20 of those entities already available at launch. Furthermore, the organization has set a strategic target to incorporate 80% of the entire UN system's statistical datasets onto the platform by the year 2027.

Prem Ramaswami addressed the operational rollout and training aspects of the collaboration, noting the successful adoption pace observed among international personnel. "We have taken a train-the-trainer approach throughout the rollout, and we have already seen the UN system team ramp up quickly," Ramaswami explained while discussing the framework's deployment across participating agencies.

Despite the improved accessibility of authoritative global statistics through the new platform, officials emphasized the ongoing need for careful human oversight when utilizing automated technologies. Highlighting the limitations of current generative models, Ramaswami cautioned, "When you give an AI system authoritative data does not necessarily make its conclusions authoritative. Because models can misinterpret nuance, a human should always review the outputs before citing or publishing them."
