The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, known as CERD, has expressed deep concern regarding human rights violations and hate crimes targeting minority populations, including Bengali-speaking Muslims, within India.

This evaluation took place during the committee's review of India's human rights situation, which occurred earlier this month. The high-profile review marked a significant milestone, representing India's first participation in a CERD evaluation since the year 2007.

During the proceedings, the Indian delegation participating in the review was led by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. The discussions centered on the state of various communities and the ongoing human rights landscape across the country.

Highlighting specific issues during the session, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination stated that the committee is deeply concerned by reports of widespread human rights violations committed by law enforcement personnel. These incidents reportedly affect various ethnic and religious groups as well as indigenous populations.

The committee further noted that those impacted include Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes—particularly the Dalit community—and individuals who do not hold Indian citizenship, highlighting a broad scope of affected demographics.

In response to the concerns raised during the international review, the Indian mission defended the nation's ongoing efforts. The Indian mission stated that their journey to ensure equality, dignity, and opportunity for all Indians remains ongoing.
