The strict penalties come in the wake of an ugly post-match brawl that broke out immediately after the high-stakes Champions League playoff encounter held in France.
During the fixture last month, Fenerbahce secured a crucial 2-1 victory on the night against Lyon, which was enough to ensure they progressed to the next stage of the tournament with a narrow 3-2 aggregate triumph. However, the celebrations were thoroughly overshadowed by the unsavoury clashes involving players on the pitch after the final whistle had sounded, prompting an immediate investigation by football authorities.
As a result of the subsequent disciplinary review, French midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has been handed a significant punishment by UEFA officials. Guendouzi has been suspended for a total of four UEFA club competition matches, though it has been specified that two of those matches will remain subject to a one-year probationary period. UEFA confirmed that Greenwood's punishment was handed down specifically for violating the basic rules of decent conduct during the confrontation. Both players and the Turkish club Fenerbahce must now navigate the repercussions of these official sanctions as they prepare for their upcoming continental fixtures.
