In a significant development for cricket in Bangladesh, Tamim Iqbal has been elected as the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Following his assumption of the leadership role, he made the major announcement that the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will not be organized this year.

The decision to halt the tournament for the current year comes in the wake of severe financial setbacks for the board. According to official figures released regarding the competition, the final two seasons of the BPL resulted in a cumulative financial loss of 40 crore taka for the BCB.

Addressing the financial viability of the tournament, BCB President Tamim Iqbal explained the rationale behind prioritizing other matters over the competition at this moment. He stated that the final two editions of the BPL caused a total loss of 40 crore taka for the board, leading him to state that a tournament resulting in a 20 crore taka loss per event is currently not on his priority list.

Despite shelving the tournament for this year, Tamim Iqbal expressed a continued belief in the commercial and public appeal of the property. He remarked that he still believes the BPL is a very good product which generates a lot of interest, noting that people actually come to watch the matches.

Looking toward the future, the newly elected BCB president emphasized the need for proper planning and execution before bringing the tournament back. He stated that if the BPL is organized correctly, the existing interest can be increased even further, adding that if it takes 12, 18, or even 24 months to achieve this, the board will take that time.

Concluding his remarks on the matter, Tamim Iqbal reiterated his firm stance on the operational standards required under his leadership. He affirmed that whenever they do organize the tournament, they will do it properly, and declared that otherwise, he will not do it at all.
