Aviation authorities and industry organizations are preparing for the implementation of stricter international rules governing the carriage and use of power banks on flights in 2026. These updated regulations are designed to enhance safety standards across international airports and flights, addressing the inherent risks associated with lithium-ion batteries in aircraft cabins.

Under the 2026 guidelines issued by the International Air Transport Association, commonly referred to as IATA, passengers must adhere to strict protocols regarding where and how these devices are stored. A primary directive of the new framework mandates that power banks are strictly prohibited in checked-in luggage and must instead be kept in cabin or hand baggage at all times.

Furthermore, the 2026 IATA guidance limits each traveler to carrying a maximum of two lithium-ion power banks. Specific capacity restrictions have also been established to ensure passenger and aircraft safety; each power bank should not exceed a capacity of 100 watts. Additionally, batteries with a capacity exceeding 160 watts are explicitly barred from being taken onto standard passenger flights altogether.

The updated international regulations also introduce strict operational restrictions regarding the use of these devices while airborne. Passengers are advised that power banks must not be recharged using the electrical power outlets provided by the aircraft during the flight.

Finally, the 2026 aviation guidelines strongly recommend that travelers refrain from using power banks to charge mobile phones or any other electronic devices while the flight is in progress. These comprehensive measures aim to mitigate potential safety hazards throughout the duration of international air travel.
