Storms Leave Indiana Without Power for Nine Days as Floods Hit Ohio
Severe storms and heavy rain have caused prolonged power outages affecting thousands of customers across northern Indiana. Meanwhile, flash floods in Ohio have submerged roads and prompted emergency rescues in Columbus.

Severe storms that began striking the region on August 11 have resulted in prolonged power outages in Indiana, leaving communities struggling through nine days without electricity by Thursday, August 20. The extreme weather has severely disrupted daily life, impacting infrastructure, education, and local residents who find themselves grappling with the extended disruption.
In northern Indiana, the situation remained critical as utility providers worked around the clock. The Northern Indiana Public Service Company, also known as NIPSCO, reported that nearly 68,000 customers were still without power as of Thursday morning. Despite these ongoing challenges, NIPSCO noted that it has successfully restored power connections for 306,500 customers since the storms initially struck on August 11.
The prolonged outages have had a profound impact on local communities and educational institutions. Within the Gary School District, nearly 4,300 students have been affected by the disruptions. Local residents have voiced their exhaustion over the ongoing crisis, with community member শাতিয়া হার্ডিন remarking on the continuous struggle to cope with the situation entering its second week.
The severe weather system also impacted neighboring Ohio, where heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in Columbus. The deluge resulted in over 3 inches of rainfall accumulating within a span of 12 hours, leading to widespread disruptions as roads became completely submerged by the rising floodwaters.
Emergency responders in Columbus were forced into swift action to handle the hazardous conditions. Fire department officials successfully carried out rescues, saving two women who had become trapped in a canal, as well as a 12-year-old cyclist who was swept away from a bridge by the rushing water.
As recovery efforts continue across the affected states, local leaders are emphasizing their commitment to restoration. Addressing the unfolding situation and the subsequent weather challenges, Columbus Mayor অ্যান্ড্রু গিন্থার stated that officials have dedicated all available resources to assist residents and maintain full focus on the recovery process.
