SpaceX has officially announced ambitious plans to build a second major spaceport dedicated to its Starship vehicle in the state of Louisiana. The massive new facility is planned for a former Exxon property located in Vermilion Parish. According to the company's announcements, the staggering project represents an investment of $100 billion, with construction officially scheduled to get underway in 2027.

The announcement follows what was described as a seven-year search for a suitable location to house the new infrastructure. The chosen site in Vermilion Parish is situated just 10 hours away from SpaceX's existing Starbase complex located in South Texas. The Texas site has previously served as the primary base for development, which has included 13 test flights of the Starship vehicle since 2023. Company records indicate that more than $8 billion has already been spent developing the Starship program.

The economic impact of the Louisiana project is projected to be substantial for the local region. Projections indicate that the development will create 3,000 direct new jobs over a 10-year period, boasting an average annual salary of $92,600 for those direct new positions. Furthermore, economic forecasts estimate that more than 30,000 construction jobs will be generated at the peak of the building phase.

Local officials have expressed profound optimism regarding the arrival of the aerospace giant in Vermilion Parish. Chad Vallo shared enthusiastic sentiments about the long-term impact on the community, stating, 'We are very excited to be in this position to receive one of the best opportunities of a lifetime which will bring not only a variety of jobs to our Parish but will offer opportunities to our grandchildren allowing them to stay home for employment.'

Amid these sweeping facility expansions, company leadership has also outlined long-term operational shifts for the aerospace manufacturer. Elon Musk explicitly stated that he will retire the reliable Falcon rockets once the Starship vehicle is flying multiple times per week. However, the rapid pace of development continues to face scrutiny following safety incidents, including an event in May where a construction worker employed by a third-party contractor fell to his death at the existing Texas Starbase site.
