A South Korean court has ordered an individual to pay financial compensation following an online fake bomb threat that triggered a substantial emergency response. According to reports from the Korea Herald, Prothom Alo, and Reuters, the legal ruling requires the perpetrator to pay a total of 12,567,881 won in damages. This monetary penalty follows an incident that disrupted public safety operations and mobilized dozens of law enforcement personnel in the country.
The sequence of events began in August 2025, when the man uploaded a video to YouTube containing a direct threat to blow up the Shinsegae Department Store. The online post immediately raised security concerns, prompting authorities to launch a thorough investigation to track down the source of the dangerous hoax and ensure public protection at the commercial location.
Following the online publication of the threat, law enforcement agencies mobilized significant resources to address the potential danger. Records indicate that a total of 277 police officers were deployed to manage the situation resulting from the online declaration. The rapid emergency response highlighted the severe legal and operational consequences associated with making false terror threats on digital platforms in South Korea.
The manhunt ultimately led police to track the suspect to Hadong, a location situated in South Gyeongsang Province approximately 290 kilometers southeast of the capital city of Seoul. Law enforcement officers successfully apprehended the suspect in the region, bringing an end to the immediate security operation sparked by the digital video.
This case forms part of a broader security challenge faced by authorities in the country. During 2025, South Korea witnessed a total of 177 online bomb threats nationwide. These incidents frequently required massive security mobilizations, such as a separate instance involving the deployment of 571 police officers, alongside severe judicial penalties that have included sentences of two and a half years in prison and fines reaching 29,280,000 won.
