Sonos iOS App Update Adds Live Activities for Lockscreen Controls

Sonos has officially released an update for its iOS application, bringing long-awaited support for Apple Live Activities to iPhone users. This new integration provides direct music and media playback controls directly on the device's lockscreen, streamlining the listening experience across supported Sonos audio systems without requiring users to constantly unlock their phones or navigate deep into the mobile application.

Despite the high demand for this capability, the newly introduced feature is not enabled automatically upon updating the software. According to the release details, the Live Activity is turned off by default and must be explicitly enabled by the user in both the Sonos app preferences and the general iOS system settings before it will appear on the display.

The implementation also includes specific automated behaviors designed to manage device screen space and battery efficiency. Notably, the Live Activity is programmed to automatically disappear from the lockscreen exactly 15 minutes after audio playback has stopped completely.

Furthermore, the update includes support for Apple Watch and CarPlay, although direct playback controls are not supported on those specific companion devices. Users should also note that album art is currently unavailable on the lockscreen interface while using the feature.

The audio company previously described the addition as a much requested, anticipated, and needed feature from its user base. This rollout addresses continuous customer feedback regarding quick access to audio management directly from Apple device screens.
