Selina Malek Chowdhury takes over as Chhayanaut Sangit Bidyayatan principal

Selina Malek Chowdhury has officially assumed her responsibilities as the newly appointed principal of Chhayanaut Sangit Bidyayatan, a prominent music institution based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The formal handover of her new leadership role took place during a special meeting attended by teachers on the morning of last Friday, August 14, 2026.

With this new appointment, Selina Malek Chowdhury becomes the third individual to formally hold the position of principal in the history of the esteemed institution. The leadership lineage of the school dates back to its founding decades, carrying forward a rich and significant cultural legacy in the region's musical education.

Historically, the position of principal was first held by Ustad Motiur Rahman Khan, who took charge when the Bidyayatan was established in 1963 and successfully carried out his administrative and educational duties until 1967. Following his passing, the legendary Sanjida Khatun assumed the role as the second principal, dedicating decades of service to the institution until her passing on March 25, 2025.

Additionally, the institution's historical records note that Anjali Roy served as the acting principal for a duration of four years, beginning in the year 1983. These distinguished figures have collectively shaped the academic and cultural foundation of the Dhaka-based music institution over the past several decades.

The newly appointed principal, Selina Malek Chowdhury, brings a deeply accomplished background in classical and Rabindra Sangit studies to her new administrative post. Her connection to the institution's legacy is further underscored by her academic excellence, having achieved the first position in the Rabindra Sangit department in 1968, for which she was honored with the prestigious Moti Mia Gold Medal.
